Krystyna Pacut

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (3)Krystyna Pacut (Janiec), 74, died peacefully, July 19, 2024, with family by her side in Iowa City following a sudden illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Now let me tell you how this FORCE in our lives LIVED and the sacrifices she made for her family so they could live the American Dream!

Krystyna was born March 13, 1950 in Nisko, Poland to Kazimierz and Maria Janiec. From the time she was very little she lived a life of farming that was good but also had its difficult times. We cherish the stories she would tell us of those hardships and to be grateful for all the little things in life. These stories would often come up during celebrations and Christmas when my mom remembers having fruit like oranges as a treat or the local store actually carrying some fresh bread and baked goods. Stores were not lined up with items like they are here in the United States. Most items were rationed so they relied heavily on their farming skills to provide but she always talked about how lovely that simple life was. She absolutely adored doing chores with her father and just being by his side.

In 1971, she moved to Vienna, Austria where she would eventually meet and marry her husband of 46 years, Jack (Kazimierz) Pacut in 1975. Again, we remember the stories my mom would tell us of working odd jobs while in Vienna, barely making any money and sometimes living on two rolls and a pint of milk for a week. I suppose these and her childhood memories were what set the base for my mom to love to cook and always provide food not just for the people she loved but for anyone that might be hungry. She would always say that it was a basic right to be able to eat and one of the worst feelings was to be hungry, especially as a child. My mom would ALWAYS stop at any corner or street for anyone asking for help. She didn’t need to know why they needed help, just that they needed it.

In 1975, Jack and Krystyna immigrated to the United States, seeking the American dream with $300 in their pockets and their daughter, Anna Danuta on their lap. Upon entry they asked and were granted asylum (Poland was communist at the time, hence why they set up residency in Vienna). Upon settling in Newark, New Jersey, both she and Jack became permanent residents and again worked several jobs to pay the bills while learning the English language as well. We would often laugh about how I would say we grew up in the projects but it was the truth and was some of the best times of our lives. The diversity and ability to live and love people of every color and race was instilled in us from a young age by our parents but particularly by my mom. Her genuine love for the human soul is something I will forever be grateful for. She eventually settled on what she would say was her dream job with some of her best friends. She was a cook at the local hospital in Somerville, New Jersey when everything was made from scratch and she absolutely loved it. In 1980, they would welcome my brother, Joseph Henry.

In 1987, they were given an opportunity to expand on that American dream even further and move to the Midwest. Dubuque, Iowa to be exact and were actually able to purchase a home, with a pool! With this move came more sacrifices of which my mom was always making for her family and she left her job to work on the line for the plastics company my father became a maintenance manager for in Peosta, IA, Captive Plastics now Berry. Here we made our home that was always full of the absolute best parties, food, friends (the Polish Mafia my husband would call them), music and Polish traditions that at times I know was so much work for my mom to prepare for but she always had a smile on her face, unless my dad had too much vodka or scotch of course.

In the years following, there were graduations, a wedding and travel to Poland, even family coming to visit from Poland. You see it was not as easy as just booking a flight to travel from Poland to the United States. You had to apply for and be approved for a travel Visa or be lucky enough to win one in the lottery. The pursuit of the American dream again came with sacrifices like leaving her family in Poland and only communicating via phone calls, cards and packages she would send with items not available to them in Poland yet readily available here. My mom also had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and it is this battle that she fought day in and day out her whole remaining life that really made her stand out to be that force in my life. She taught me work ethic, love for family and friends, what is right from wrong and female empowerment. She was always so proud of my accomplishment of becoming a nurse and working in Intensive Care and she made sure to let anyone she met know it.

In 2000, two of their biggest dreams came true. My parents, including myself became US Citizens along with becoming grandparents to Liam Robert McComas. In 2006, another dream came true when they welcomed granddaughter Emmy Krystyna McComas. My mom adored and loved these kids with every single ounce of her soul. There wasn’t anything they could do wrong in her eyes and she made sure to let them know it by letting them have all the full sugar sweet tea they ever wanted when visiting. Even making a jug or two to send home with them because she knew I would never buy it. She was so proud of these two and all their accomplishments and she made sure to let them know even up to her last day here with us on earth.

Upon retirement, life was filled with travel to all of the grandchildren’s activities, cooking, eating and Polish traditions at the holidays. It’s these traditions that she instilled in us that will be missed but we will do our best to keep them alive. Although, I am not sure I will ever be able to live up to and make her traditional white borscht at Easter or mashed potatoes but I will do my best.

With great memories came sorrow as well. The passing of my father, Jack in September of 2021 followed shortly after by my brother Joey in March of 2023 really took a toll on my mother’s heart but as always, she picked herself up and fought through those tragedies to be present for our family. She was fiercely independent and again the FORCE that kept us going. She quickly learned how to use an iPhone after my brothers passing and our daily Facetime sessions began. There wasn’t but maybe two days where we did not Facetime each other. Her Facetime calls with Liam and Emmy were a highlight in her day and she continued to join me on the bleachers for all their activities. Her love for my “Big Guy” Rob was immeasurable and she always told me how proud she was of him and how safe he always made her feel. She loved him as her own son. He was never introduced as “in law”.

Krystyna’s surviving family include daughter Anna (Rob) McComas, grandchildren Liam and Emmy, niece Beata and nephew Edek of Poland.

There will be a fun and casual Celebration of Life for my mom, dad and brother at a later date. While this obituary is long, believe it or not, it still in no way tells my mother’s full story. There is a reason why I call her our FORCE and there are no amount of words that will ever convey that level to anyone. But what will help you understand is to ask us about her. Ask us to tell you stories about her life. Look and talk to our kids and you will see her in them. She is a FORCE. Until we meet again…. Muah!!

Mary A. Wohlford

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (20)Mary A. Wohlford, 98, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away on July 15, 2024, after a very short illness. She was surrounded by several of her daughters when she was called home.

Visitation will be held from 2 – 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Visitation will continue from 9 – 10 prior to funeral mass at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2024, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Gabriel Mensah will officiate.

Mary was born on March 29, 1926, to George and Anna Beckmann of Dyersville, Iowa. She attended Xavier grade school and Xavier high school. After graduating from high school, Mary went on to study nursing at the St. Francis School of Nursing in Freeport, Illinois. After graduating from nurses training, she was inducted into the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp and worked as a Cadet Nurse from 1944 until 1947. She met Walter C. Wohlford while attending nurses’ training and he quickly became the love of her life. Mary and Walter married on March 29, 1948, in the St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. After 39 years of marriage, Mary lost her beloved husband Walter when he passed away on November 23, 1987.

Walt and Mary were the parents to eight beautiful daughters, Connie, Sandy, Ann, Susan, Mary Pat, Jenny, Elizabeth and Christine. Their four older daughters were famously known for each being born on August 3rd, a world record that was codified by Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Though Mary and Walt had a very busy home life, there was always room for others. Walt and Mary were active as Catholic Charities foster parents to Tim and Jim Weiss and Roberto and Louis Del Riego. They hosted a foreign exchange student as well, that foreign exchange student, Monica Westhoff, soon became a member of the Dyersville community. In the Wohlford home there was always room for others at the table.

Together, Walt and Mary owned Wohlford’s Water Treatment and Quality Pools, businesses they managed together for decades. When Walt wanted to go into the pool business, he felt he should have a pool in his back yard in part for marketing purposes. Mary originally was not interested in having a pool, but she very quickly warmed up to the idea. The pool served as a gathering place for the family, neighbors, and many of the Wohlford children’s friends. Mary spent every summer sunning by the pool while watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren swim.

Besides raising eight daughters and managing their businesses, Mary worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque for 24 years, from 1971-1995. As a nurse, she helped babies enter the world and she held her patients’ hands as they were being called home. After Mary’s retirement she organized the Parish Health Ministry in Dyersville in 1996. Mary was active in the Catholic Daughters of America and was a hospice volunteer. From 1997 until late in life Mary Wohlford traveled with Medical Ministry International (MMI). While traveling with MMI, she provided medical and surgical care in clinics in Jamaica, Ecuador, Thailand, Haiti, Armenia, Fiji, and various locations in Africa. Mary also worked with the American Red Cross and served to help those devastated by Hurricane Katrina, later, she worked with the Red Cross in Rochester Minnesota after the city was ravaged by flooding. Mary’s passports tell the story of a fearless woman who traveled the world and lived in service to others.

Mary loved a good cup of coffee, exploring nature, exercising and swimming. She loved to debate issues related to religion, science, politics, health care and current events, she also loved to travel. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary many times a day, and to ensure she always had a rosary at hand, she wore her rosary around her neck as a necklace.

She loved and was so proud of her daughters, her grandchildren (Emily, Justin, Zack, Sonny, Tyler, Clayton, Austen, Christopher, Abbey, Shelly, Stuart, Walter, Jessica, Tony, Eli, Alex, Ivy, and Max), and her great-grandchildren (Ella, Cooper, Jase, Mollie, Ruby, Margot, Luella, Rayne, Willow, Wilder, Avery, Nolan, Adhelle, Shayla, Antwan Jr., Jezel, Zion, Lyle, Rory, Letti, Louise, Waylon and Shawn.

Mary was predeceased in death by her loving husband Walter C. Wohlford, her daughter Ann George, granddaughter Shelly Lucas, her brothers Luke (John), Paul, Tom Beckmann and Sisters Ester Sears and Vivian Glab. She is predeceased in death by her son in laws Bob Jacobson, Dennis Rausch, and nephew David Beckmann.

Goldstrich), Jennifer Kulper (Roger), Elizabeth Wohlford (Allan Paul), and Christine Wohlford. She is survived by 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The world was a better place because of the life of Mary Ann Beckmann Wohlford. Hers was a life well lived and she will be sorely missed.

Marianne R. Haupert

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (21)Marianne Rose (Bray) Haupert died peacefully on July 14, 2024, surrounded by her children. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20th at St. Joseph the Worker Parish. Visitation will take place that day at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Egelhof, Siegert, and Casper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on February 13, 1938 to Louis and Dorothy Bray, and resided in Dubuque her entire life. She married Carl Haupert on July 13, 1960, a marriage that lasted until his death in 2022. She was a dedicated and wonderful mother to their seven children.

She graduated from the Visitation Academy and earned her LPN from Mercy Hospital, where she was employed as a nurse. She was a life-long caregiver, beginning with her career as a nurse, and extending to motherhood. She gave up her nursing career to devote herself to the care of her seven children, one of whom she cared for until his death in 2008. She later served as the primary caregiver for her husband, until his illness required his movement to Luther Manor for the final year of his life.

She spent a part of every summer of her life at the family cottage in Waupaca, Wisconsin, and had been planning for her annual trip in the weeks before her death. She enjoyed spending time with her family, whether at home or the cottage, and had even adopted the 21st century means of communication with her extended family: texting. She was a master at the use of emojis, though never did quite learn how to catch typos before hitting the send button, much to the amusem*nt of her children and grandchildren. She spent her final evening in typical fashion: relaxing at the end of the day with a good book and the company of her cat.

Mom was not famous, and never flashy. But she was always there for us, in good times and bad, sickness and health, our triumphs and our tragedies. She never wavered. Her life was based on the lessons we find in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. Love is patient,love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,it is not easily angered,and it keeps no record of wrongs. That was Mom.

A frequent joke among the family was which of the children was her favorite. It was funny because it was so unimaginable. Mom had no favorites. In fact, to the sometime irritation of her children, she seemed to possess no capacity to dislike anyone. She had an amazing knack to see the good in everyone, which was reflected back upon her. In the last two years, since the death of her husband, she often wondered why she was so lucky to have children who were so attentive to her. The answer was simple. We learned from the master.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bray, her children Mike (Mary Ellen), Amy (Mark) Oles, Lisa (Rick) Lewis, Jenny, Ann (Nestor) Schnasse, and David, numerous nieces and nephews, 17 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Barbara, her brothers John and Louis, her husband, Carl, and her youngest son Paul.

The family would like to thank the police officers, paramedics, firefighters and dispatchers, nurses, doctors, and chaplain at Finley Hospital for their wonderful and compassionate care in her final hours, and Fr. Brian Dellaert, who administered her final rites.

Liam W. Kenniker

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (33)Liam Wayne Kenniker, age 10, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on July 12, 2024, at home, while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Liam’s life, a private family Celebration of Life is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Liam’s family.

Liam was born on January 4, 2014, in Dubuque, IA, the oldest son to Jacob and Tara (Perry) Kenniker. He boldly arrived six weeks early into our world as the Lord simply could not wait to allow Liam to begin his personal ministry of changing the world around him one heart at a time. He was born with Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH) and from the very beginning Liam would courageously embrace and develop the strength necessary to face each new battle head on. All who knew and loved him understood quite clearly that each seizure could be the last moment Liam’s light would be shining so brightly.

He recently graduated from the 4thgrade at Eisenhower and enjoyed going to school more than most children could appreciate. Whether he was spending his day in the wheelchair, or made it comfortably into his favorite bean bag chair, Liam was always ready to make the most of each day he was given. Many would say that Liam was nonverbal; but for those who knew him well, Liam was surely anything but. He may not have had the ability to use his words as we do, but there was no doubt that when he was not happy with the situation at hand, you would be quite aware of his discontentment and should promptly make the necessary moves to remedy this violation before any further penalties were incurred. And to witness the joy on his innocent and precious face when the Beatles were playing in the background, or SpongeBob was on the tv was all it took to know that some of the best moments in life are simply the ones which make others hearts sing. Liam would humbly live his life as offered and proving to be an inspiration to all who crossed his path was merely a side-effect in his eyes. He brought so much joy and love into this world with an almost effortless enthusiasm and always found the opportunities to show off his courage and inner fighter as just another chance to simply do what he did best; being Liam! There are surely times in this life where it’s difficult to see the hand of God working within our lives, but when He sends sweet souls like Liam into our world, it’s a true blessing to witness Him working all things for good for those who love Him and consequently reminding us that things are not always as they appear on the outside, but with a little deeper dig towards the truth we can see His ultimate love in a glorious and bold display. We will miss Liam more than we could ever accurately depict in mere words, but we are beyond blessed to have had him entrusted unto us for even the much too short 10 years we had and will now wait patiently to see him once again, and find comfort in knowing on our next visit, he will be residing in his state of eternal perfection, unencumbered by any of this mortal world’s imperfections. Thank you, Liam, for impacting this world to a greater level in your single decade than most lives could hope for in a century and may the Lord bless and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again. Job well done good and faithful servant…Job Well Done Liam!

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Liam include,

his loving parents,
Jacob Wayne (Tara Jo) Kenniker, Dubuque, IA;

his siblings,
Archie Kenniker and Molly Kenniker, Dubuque, IA;

his grandparents,
Wayne (Lori) Kenniker, Dubuque, IA,
and Brian Perry, Sherrill, IA;

his great-grandmother,
Lavonne Latham, Dubuque, IA;

his great-grandfather,
James Perry, Asbury, IA;

his uncles,
Sam (Ashley) Kenniker, Dubuque, IA,
and Alex Kenniker, Dubuque, IA;

his aunt,
Jill Murphy, Dubuque, IA;

along with numerous extended family, caretakers, classmates, friends, and neighbors.

Liam was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Gary Latham.

Liam’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque, the team at UICH, the educational staff and therapists, and his in home nurses, Denise and Madison, for all of their professional and compassionate care. Along with all of our family and friends who have given so generously of their time, love and support throughout Liam’s 10 years among us. There is no denying that Liam’s impact on the world around him has been immeasurable and life changing, but we also wanted you to know that your imprint on our lives has been priceless as well. Thank you to each and every one of you and may the Lord bless you all graciously for all of the kindnesses you have shared.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg, Iowa with Rev. Tyler Raymond presiding and Rev. Noah Diehm concelebrating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Luxemburg, Iowa.

Julie was born on January 24, 1933 in Luxemburg, Iowa, daughter of Mathias G. and Bertha (Oberbroeckling) Maiers. She grew up as the second youngest of nine children on the family farm, receiving her elementary education in Luxemburg and high school in New Vienna. On June 4, 1953, she was united in marriage to Edward N. Ungs at Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg, Iowa. Ed preceded Julie in death on January 2, 2010.

After living and working in Dubuque after high school, Julie accompanied her new husband Ed, who was freshly graduated from Loras College and drafted as an accountant with the U.S Army, to Fort Knox, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana. She worked as a civil employee for the Army as they started their life together. The young couple later moved back to Luxemburg, where Ed became U.S. Postmaster and worked with his father. Julie and Ed then purchased the family business, naming it Ungs Shopping Center, which continues as a family operation today.

In addition to raising her family and working at the store, Julie was engaged in her local communities through volunteering. She served on boards and committees with her parish and the Catholic school systems of the area, the Dyersville Hospital, the Dyersville Community Foundation and the Dyersville Health Foundation. As the years went on, she also worked “extra” jobs – catering with her dear friend Betty Wilgenbusch at the Avalon in Rickardsville, with Rosie Kruse and the Dyersville Country Club, and with Judy Woods at Fidelity Bank Five Star Club. She was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Parish in Luxemburg and of the Catholic Daughters of America, as well as the Hospital Auxiliary of Dyersville Hospital, which later became MercyOne.

Julie was a very social and fun-loving person. Her children would say she brought the party wherever she went. She had great friends and loved her house to be the gathering spot for family, friends and friends of family! She made sure there was always plenty of food and drinks, especially the “Ungs’ Manhattan” around the bar she and Ed built in their beloved home. She loved to travel with Ed, to attend her kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events, to have coffee with the Luxemburg ladies, and to go regularly to her “Gal’s Club” to weigh in and talk health and diet in Guttenberg (after which they would enjoy pancake breakfasts!) In her later years, she talked with her sister Pat every night after the news and the ball game on TV. She and Rosie Klein of Luxemburg had some great adventures, too, both widows, and sharing grandchildren from the union of their children, Mike and Rhonda. Julie took her faith and fun seriously. Praying the rosary – and occasional trips to the casino – were both favorite pastimes. She prayed the rosary with her children and grandchildren just hours before passing away.

Julie made community everywhere she lived. Her wonderful friends at MercyOne Senior Care, where she spent her last year, joined her for meals, card games, bingo, crafts and more. She loved her Senior Care pals: Nancy, Inez, Catherine – and the wonderful staff that cared for her.

Julie is survived by her six children: Mary (Jens Sogaard) Ungs-Sogaard of Dyersville, IA; Mike (Rhonda) Ungs of Luxemburg, IA; Susi (Randy) Jaeger of Swisher, IA; Shari (John) Greenwood of Peosta, IA; Steve (Jill) Ungs of Cedar Rapids, IA; Shelly (Jack) Harkins of Portage, WI. Julie also leaves behind to cherish her memory her 17 grandchildren Katrina (Joel) Anderson, Kirsten Sogaard, Abbie (Jeremy) Petsche, Leah (Adam) Krogman, Anna Ungs, Chloe (friend Michael Keegan,) Nic (Jeanne) Jaeger, Melissa (Troy) King, Kimberly (Matt) Arjes, Sara (Wes) Vorwald, Megan (Skyland Felch) Greenwood, Brian (Alissa) Greenwood,) Lisa Greenwood, Samantha Ungs, Alison (Sam) Hoeger, Sam (friend Kori Martens) and Lilly Harkins; 22 great-grandchildren, with one on the way: Axel, Orion, Hannah, Nolan, Reese, Luka, Asher, Landon, Grant, Grayson, Madelyn, Lincoln, Levi, Jack, Eivan, Noah, Liam, Ben, Evan, Everett, Porter, Penelope; her sisters Eldora Pfeiler Pins of Manchester, IA and Patricia Elliott of Madison, WI; her brother Merle (Verna) Maiers of Madison, WI.; her sister-in-law Joanne Ungs of Cedar Rapids, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her parents-in-law Edward and Rita (Lueken) Ungs; brothers Ralph (Grace), Jake (Norma), John (Frannie) and Jerome (Benedetta) Maiers; sister Vern (Ray) Lucas; brothers- and sisters-in-law Schim Elliott, Matt Pfeiler, Paul Pins, Shirley Hackett and Herb Ungs; her grandchildren Christian Sogaard and Rachel Ungs; and nieces and nephews also sorely missed.

Memorials may be directed to Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg, IA for its new window project and air conditioning, or to the memorial fund for the family to disperse in Julie’s memory.

Julie’s family would like to extend a deep thanks to all who supported and cared for Julie, especially the staffs at MercyOne Senior Care, MercyOne Dyersville–Dubuque, doctors and staff of Medical Associates, Hospice of Dubuque and the Ellen Kennedy Center. Your wonderful care was remarkable, and so appreciated.
