Urban Report

June 8, 2015

The George Gordon First Nation Business Centre was featured recently in the NCCA Community Voices newspaper. Thank you to Jan Morier for the interview and write up.

The article highlights all the resources at the Business Centre, including Off-Reserve/Urban Services and shares information on George Gordon Developments Ltd and the Wicehtowak Workforce Development program. Since the Business Centre opened in August 2013, it started with GGDL’s CEO Kim Sinclair and the Off-Reserve/Urban Services; we have since grown and now occupy 11 offices in the building. By recognizing the needs of our Off-Reserve membership, we have brought in a Governance office for Chief and Council, Registry Services, Post-Secondary, and TLE. GGDL developed the Wicehtowak Workforce Development program which offers employment and training opportunities for all First Nation, Metis and Inuit. There are also two independent offices occupied by Centre of Choice, Wellness Coach & Therapist Marlene McNab and Dr. Kim McKay-McNab, Clinical Psychologist also works out of the Centre.

If you haven’t had a chance to stop in for a visit, please do so – we welcome all our visitors!! The Business Centre is located at 2704 10th Avenue (corner of Angus St & 1oth Ave) and is open Monday to Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

In November 2012, Council supported by motion the development of Urban Services. With the support and approval of Council, a proposal developed by the Urban Portfolio was presented to the TLE Board on December 8, 2012 for consideration of support under TLE Band Development. Follow-up was requested at this time as to the success and challenges other First Nations have faced in providing these services. Other First Nations who succeed in Urban Services are supported by their TLE Band Development for numerous years as capacity building is a process that can be timely. After discussions with the Board, the motion to support the proposal was attained on September 20, 2013. Urban Services has been working toward ensuring our members are aware that these services are meant to benefit all members who do not reside on the reserve. Some of our activities to date include:

  • Education Support for secondary students – Bus pass, school fee assistance, extra-curricular assistance
  • Employment and Training Support
  • Security Guard Training, Regina
  • Pipefitting Course, Saskatoon (GGDL)
  • Upcoming: Youth Employment Training

Urban Services is essential for the prosperity of our people to develop a community based program that will aid in enhancing their skill set and enabling a link between on and off reserve programs.
